My Brother

climbed a chain-link fence to get to the river. He sat by the river’s brush to witness how dry it had become. In the sand he found a tin box & inside he found a knife. He hid the knife in his pocket & when he went to climb the chain-link fence to go home, he cut himself in the thigh. For years he lived with a trench. I’d clean his trench with alcohol & carefully stuff the trench with gauze each morning. When the trench became unbearable I’d sing & use manzanilla to calm his fevered eyes. My brother still lives & his trench has never healed. The trench never healed because we willed it so. The trench hasn’t killed him because we willed it so. Did this trench really happen to your brother? The trench has happened to every brother I’ve ever had. I have had many brothers & I have had many trenches. As long as he screams in pain, I know that through the trench we’re still alive.
